The “E” Words

by Tim 'Gonzo' Gordon on June 25, 2009

When you are standing in front of an audience to give a speech, you’d better be enthusiastic.

And energized. And energetic.

Perhaps electric.

If there’s one thing that the human race can not get enough of, it is energy and enthusiasm.

Have you ever seen a speaker that lacked energy? How did you manage to stay awake? Or did you start checking your blackberry for messages, or start Twittering since that was obviously more interesting than the speaker?

On the other hand, no doubt you’ve seen a speaker that was so jazzed and electric you had to watch!

This has happened to me a few times.

I recall seeing Tony Robbins speak a few years ago at Expo West, the Natural Products showcase in Anaheim each March.

Tony, if you don’t know, is a powerful and energetic speaker. If you have time, view this 22 minute speech he did at TED in Monterey. Agree or disagree with his opinions, he’s an energetic speaker:

Another energetic speaker is Gary Vaynerchuk. His passion and enthusiasm energized the crowd at the September 2008 Web 2.0 Expo. It didn’t matter that he was not a particularly professional or polished speaker. What mattered was his energy and enthusiasm.

If you took time to view just these two speeches you know what energy and enthusiasm can do for you as a speaker, and certainly what it does for your audience.

Next time you’re on stage, live with Energy and Enthusiasm.

And see what happens.
