Think Social Media is a Fad?
This morning I learned about President Obama receiving the Nobel Prize. But I didn’t learn it from traditional news sources, like the radio, TV or newspaper. I saw it on a Facebook post. A few moments later a comment came up on Twitter about it.
This is typical of the way I consume news media. I canceled my newspaper subscription about a year ago, partly because I was continually reading news that I’d seen up to 36 hours earlier online – and those were the leading headlines on the paper.
I did want to maintain the paper for one or two reasons: first, I’m a Portland Trailblazers fan, and I liked reading about the previous night’s game when I had breakfast. Second, I appreciated scanning the editorial page, where I read local and national editorials, and soaked up the local pulse by reading the ‘letters to the editor’ section.
But I realized all of that stuff was online and easily accessible. I just shifted the newspaper reading to online consumption and that was that.
I realize there are still people who think social media is a fad of some sort and that the world will eventually come to its senses. By the way, those people will not be a part of the revolution – they’ll watch it go by and wondered what the hell happened.
